Photographs of missile launchers beside the water at Mar-a-Lago have made an otherwise routine part of presidential protection unusually visible. In October 2026, reporting based on photographs and statements from U.S. Northern Command and NORAD described Humvee-mounted Avenger air-defense systems around President Donald Trump’s Palm Beach estate and at the nearby airport, alongside counter-drone sensors and jammers. The deployment does not replace the rules governing the sky above Palm Beach. It adds a ground-based layer beneath them, for threats that are low, fast and hard to spot until they are close.
What Was Photographed Around Mar-a-Lago
According to The War Zone, photographs showed two Avenger systems on a floating platform in Lake Worth Lagoon on the Mar-a-Lago shoreline, with another on the beach, while at least two more were seen at Donald J. Trump International Airport, about three miles west. The systems had been deployed about two weeks before the report was updated on October 30, 2026. NORAD and U.S. Northern Command said they were deployed at the Secret Service’s request, adding a complementary layer of technology to enhance protection. Officials declined to give more detail, citing operational security.
What Is an Avenger?
The AN/TWQ-1 Avenger is a U.S. Army short-range air-defense system built around a turret mounted on a Humvee, in the Army’s description on a M1097A1 HMMWV chassis. It is designed to move with the forces it protects, and it has also been used for homeland defense since the September 11 attacks. Each Avenger carries two launchers, each holding four FIM-92 Stinger heat-seeking surface-to-air missiles, for eight missiles ready to fire. The War Zone notes that the Stingers have been upgraded to deal with drones, while remaining capable against traditional aircraft, helicopters and other low-flying targets.

Why Put Launchers on the Water?
Launchers on a barge in the lagoon and on the beach gain a clear field of view across the water, where a low-flying drone or aircraft would otherwise be hard to track against land clutter. The War Zone argued that Mar-a-Lago’s proximity to the sea makes an approach from the water a plausible route, and that small drones, including first-person-view types, are now widely available. The Avengers were joined by Northern Command counter-drone Fly-Away Kits, which use cameras, radar and electronic-support measures to spot, classify and track drones, with electronic-warfare tools that can jam them.
The Rules Above Them: Flight Restrictions Over Palm Beach
The ground systems are meant to augment, not replace, the NORAD-enforced temporary flight restrictions over Mar-a-Lago. The War Zone reported a standing restriction running through October 20, 2027, with additional restrictions when Trump visits, and local reporting has described visit-time restrictions covering a 30-nautical-mile radius around Palm Beach, grounding drones and limiting private flights. Enforcement is real: the report cited an August 11 FAA filing, first reported by the Palm Beach Daily News, saying more than 160 planes and drones had breached the Palm Beach airspace since restrictions took effect in October 2025, and NORAD said an F-16 intercepted a general-aviation aircraft over Palm Beach on October 24.
What Is Not Yet Public
What the public record does not settle is how long this deployment will last, exactly how many systems are involved, or what specific threat prompted it. NORAD and Northern Command declined to name the ground-based assets or their exact locations, and officials would not provide specific reasons when asked. That restraint is normal for protective operations, but it leaves an important distinction intact: photographs prove Avengers were visible at Mar-a-Lago and the airport in October 2026, not that every detail of the security plan is known. A visible launcher is not, by itself, proof that an attack was imminent; such defenses are often preventive.
