The Tampa Bay Rays kept their World Series hopes alive Tuesday night, defeating the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 in 12 innings in Game 4 at Tropicana Field.
A walk-off in the 12th
Facing elimination after losing the first three games, Tampa Bay rallied in the bottom of the 12th to secure a dramatic walk-off victory and extend the series to at least five games. Milwaukee remains one win away from its first World Series championship, while the Rays continue their pursuit of their first title.
Neither team scored again after the fifth inning until the 12th, when Milwaukee rookie Cooper Pratt hit a solo home run in the top half to put the Brewers ahead 3-2. Tampa Bay answered in the bottom half when a throwing error allowed Junior Caminero to reach base, setting up a rally that culminated in Jonny DeLuca’s game-tying single and Ben Williamson’s walk-off hit to right field, scoring the winning run.
How the series got here
| Game | Result |
|---|---|
| Game 1 | Brewers 3, Rays 2 |
| Game 2 | Brewers 5, Rays 4 |
| Game 3 | Brewers 10, Rays 1 |
| Game 4 | Rays 4, Brewers 3 (12 innings) |
| Game 5 | Wednesday night, Tropicana Field |
The Brewers had looked unstoppable. Their 10-1 rout in Game 3 on Monday featured eight runs with two outs in the fifth inning, and rookie Robert Gasser faced the minimum through six innings. Milwaukee entered Game 4 having won eight in a row, and no team in history has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit in the World Series.
History is still against Tampa Bay
The Rays became just the fifth team in World Series history to win Game 4 after falling behind 3-0, according to Major League Baseball. The previous four teams in that situation did not win Game 5, leaving Tampa Bay with a difficult historical challenge as it attempts to extend the series further.
Pratt finished with four hits, including the go-ahead homer, but Tampa Bay’s late surge prevented Milwaukee from completing the sweep — and from becoming the first team to sweep the World Series since the 2012 San Francisco Giants.
What to watch next
Game 5 is scheduled for Wednesday night at Tropicana Field, where the Brewers will again try to secure the championship and the Rays will look to build on their extra-inning comeback. If Tampa Bay wins again, the series shifts back to Milwaukee for Game 6 on Friday — and, if necessary, a decisive Game 7 on Saturday. For a Rays team that was one loss from elimination, that road is still steep. But Tuesday night proved the sweep is off the table, and in October, that is enough to keep believing.
