Week 9’s Monday Night Football matchup was billed as a possible postseason preview between two of the NFC’s finest sides. Instead, it proved to be a wire-to-wire beatdown: the Chicago Bears downed the Seattle Seahawks 34-17 at Lumen Field on Monday night, picking up their sixth win of the year and announcing themselves, loudly, as Super Bowl contenders.

A statement from the opening drive

Chicago set the tone immediately. The Bears marched 17 plays and 80 yards on their opening possession — an eight-and-a-half-minute drive capped by Caleb Williams finding Luther Burden III for the game’s first score. It broke Seattle’s streak of 16 consecutive games without allowing an opponent to score on its opening possession, and Seattle never recovered the initiative.

The Bears led 13-9 at half-time, with Cairo Santos kicking field goals from 44 and 38 yards, and then took control in the second half. Swift scored on a 1-yard run over left tackle with 5:38 left in the third quarter to make it 20-9, and after Seattle closed to 20-17 on a Sam Darnold touchdown pass and a two-point conversion to Tory Horton, Chicago answered decisively. Swift scored twice more, and a James Lynch interception of a batted ball set up the clincher.

Caleb Williams finished 24-of-34 passing for 247 yards and a touchdown, and has now won three straight since returning from a hamstring injury. Chicago is 4-0 in games Williams starts and finishes. D’Andre Swift rushed 27 times for a game-high 69 yards and three touchdowns — modest yardage, ruthless finishing. Colston Loveland and Luther Burden III each caught seven passes.

For Seattle, Sam Darnold completed 17 of 34 passes for 188 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, and was sacked three times. Jaxon Smith-Njigba did what he has done all year, catching six passes for 118 yards and a touchdown, but it was not nearly enough.

The Simmons effect

The night’s most telling subplot wore a new uniform. Jeffery Simmons, acquired from Tennessee in a blockbuster trade last week, made his Bears debut with six tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack. According to ESPN’s postgame coverage, Seattle averaged three yards per play when Simmons was on the field, versus 13.3 yards when he was not. Chicago’s defence, already ranked ninth in the league, suddenly looks a class above.

Seattle entered the game with an NFL-best .711 winning percentage on Monday Night Football (32-13). It left at 4-4, having already lost more games this season (4) than in the whole of 2025 (3), and sitting outside the NFC wild-card race, one game behind Green Bay for the No. 7 seed. This was the Seahawks’ first loss of 2026 by more than three points — and it was not close.

What it means for the stretch run

Chicago now sits within a half-game of the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC North and heads into a Sunday Night Football showdown with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. San Francisco, coming out of its bye, holds a two-and-a-half-game lead over both Seattle and the Rams in the NFC West, while Seattle tries to bounce back this weekend against the Arizona Cardinals, fresh from their upset of Dallas.

If the Week 8 finale between these teams was billed as an NFC championship preview, Monday night suggested the gap between them is wider than anyone thought — and that the Bears, not the defending champions, are the team peaking at the right time.
